How to get a duplicate demand draf and pay order ?

Can we get a duplicate DD or PO if we lost the original one? The answer is yes, but you have to follow a little difficult process. The procedures for a duplicate Demand draft and pay order are almost same. It is always advised to keep all the details of the instrument or keep a copy of the DD or PO. With out the details of lost DD or PO it is difficult to issue a duplicate one, in practical; if you don’t have the details of the lost instrument, the duplicate issue depends on the good relation ship with banker and also the customer loyalty. Following are the process.

  1. Give a request letter to the bank for issuing a duplicate pay order stating the original PO or DD is lost and the letter must contain all the details of original instrument, like, date, Instrument number, amount, favouring, payable at place etc.
  2. The person who had applied and accepted the missing  PO or DD can only  apply for a duplicate PO or DD. and banker will cross check the signatures in letter with requisition slip earlier given.
  3. After confirming that the original PO or DD is still pending for payment, banker will ask you a stamped indemnity which attracts stamp duty as per state stamp act. This is to safe guard bank in case the original PO or DD is presented for payment.
  4. If the lost instrument is above Rs 25000.00, two independent securities attest the indemnity.
  5. The banker will issue a fresh PO after verifying the correctness of indemnity. Also bank will charge a cancellation charges as per bank rules. The old number will be cancelled in the system.
  6. The banker will issue a fresh PO after verifying the correctness of indemnity. Also bank will charge a cancellation charges as per bank rules. The old number will be cancelled in the system.
New PO will be stamped “Duplicate”

The original demand draft number will cancelled in the system, but it can be presented . The banker is still liable to pay against original DD,in case original is presented you will be forced to pay or indemnify banker as per stamped indemnity.
